Who we are

Our story began over 125 years ago in Edmonton as Canada’s first municipally owned electric utility and, ten years later, Edmonton’s water utility. We provide clean water, wastewater and drainage services, and safe, reliable energy to residential and commercial customers.

We build, own and operate electrical, natural gas and water transmission and distribution networks; water and wastewater treatment facilities; sanitary and stormwater systems;, and infrastructure in Canada and the United States. We also provide electricity, natural gas and water products and services to residential and commercial customers.

The City of Edmonton is our sole Shareholder, and we operate as a commercial entity, governed by an independent Board of Directors. Since incorporating in 1996, we’ve achieved exceptional growth and have more than doubled our dividend.

Our commitment to Indigenous peoples

Looking back

As a company operating across North America, EPCOR respectfully acknowledges our work takes place on the territory and traditional lands of many Indigenous peoples. Several of our Canadian operations reside on treaty territory.

Our history is interwoven with the development of Edmonton, the histories and legacies of interaction between settlers and Indigenous peoples, and the siting of our facilities within Edmonton. The banks of the North Saskatchewan River, where both our water treatment plants are located, have been a sacred gathering place since time immemorial.

Looking ahead

We respect the histories, languages, and cultures of First Nations, Metis, Inuit, and all Indigenous peoples across North America, whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant community.

We also recognize we need to work collaboratively and in the spirit of reconciliation with Indigenous governments and peoples as long as we continue to operate in areas that holds these significant ties.

Highlights

In September 2020, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Enoch Cree Nation that formalizes our commitment to working together in the spirit of reconciliation and collaboration. The agreement sets a strong foundation for both parties, creating a path forward on all projects that cause ground disturbance at the E.L. Smith and Rossdale Water Treatment Plants.

In early 2020, we partnered with the First Peoples’ House at the University of Alberta to support the success of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) learners until 2023.

Working collaboratively with Indigenous peoples

We continue to work collaboratively with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples for the various projects underway at EPCOR.

We respectfully acknowledge the E.L. Smith and Rossdale Water Treatment Plants are located on Treaty 6 territory – the traditional lands of the Blackfoot, the Cree, the Dene, the Nakota Sioux, and the Saulteaux and later the Métis.
